Polysyllables are longer words with more than 2 syllables.

When do we assess or involve these in our treatment goals?

  1. Speech sounds disorders – many children who have intelligibility issues have difficulties with producing these longer words.  Whole syllables can be deleted or vowels may be reduplicated or even consonants can behave differently within a multisyallbic word.    For this reason, it is useful to have a speech sample that includes these types of words – such as cucumber, stethoscope, animal and so on.

2.  Phonological awareness tasks – as children learn to decode words from speech to print, it is helpful if they can break up those longer words in order to attempt ever increasing texts of complexity.
